BOGA at the second African Climate Summit
As the Beyond Oil & Gas Alliance heads to New York for the NDC Summit, we reflect on discussions on the transition away from oil and gas at the second African Climate Summit (ACS-2) last week, led by Kenya, Nigeria and BOGA.
Across two events – on the formal ASC-2 agenda and in the EU Pavilion – Kenya, Nigeria, BOGA and representatives from the COP30 Presidency, the NDC Partnership and the European Commission discussed the importance of African leadership on a just transition from fossil fuels and the role of international partnerships in supporting implementation.
Themes included:
- The need to acknowledge economic, as well as energy and industrial dependency on oil and gas, and the true costs of dependency for both producers and consumers.
- The value of early planning and policy for major oil and gas producers like Nigeria, and the importance of taking first steps towards a longer-term, structural transition away from fossil fuels.
- The benefits of developing transition pathways to help guide investment, and of assessing the risk of stranded assets and carbon lock-in where oil and gas infrastructure is still planned.
- The value of international partnerships for a just transition, and the potential for partners to provide support and finance for African leadership on the transition away from fossil fuels.
During the event, BOGA and the NDC Partnership urged Global South governments who want to reflect the transition away from oil and gas in their NDCs to take up the offer of support under the BOGA Fund.
Nigeria also confirmed that it would become the fifth country to establish a programme under the BOGA Fund, with further details due to be announced alongside the NDC Summit next week.
