National Council on Climate Change of Nigeria, BOGA and Global Methane Hub co-host panel event at COP30
This joint event in the Blue Zone at COP30 will discuss the double challenge of accelerating action on methane reduction and planning for the transition away from oil and gas.
Efforts to reduce methane and other emissions from oil and gas production and use, in line with a 1.5°C pathway, are critical to delivering short-term emissions reductions from the oil and gas sector. At the same time, long-term planning to deliver a just, orderly and equitable transition away from oil and gas dependency is essential for producer countries.
Speakers will discuss Nigeria’s progress and next steps in the COP30 panel event ‘Partnerships for a Just Transition: Accelerating Action on Methane Reduction and Planning for a Just, Orderly and Equitable Transition’, co-hosted by the National Council on Climate Change, the Global Methane Hub and BOGA.
Nigeria’s NDC commits to eliminating routine gas flaring by 2030 and methane and other fugitive emissions from the oil and gas sector by 60% by 2035, as well as acknowledging the economic dilemma of the transition and the need for a just transition that requires bold economic diversification strategies. The recently announced BOGA Fund Programme in Nigeria and Global Methane Hub-funded programmes support these aims.
Open to all delegates, this event will feature high-level panelists from Government agencies and partner organisations. Speakers will highlight existing plans, policies and technical programmes aimed at reducing methane emissions in Nigeria’s upstream sector and supporting Nigeria’s long-term planning for a just, orderly and equitable transition from oil and gas dependency.
